So how was Geek Cluster? Quick summary anyone? Cheers.
We all arrived at the Otley simultaneously a few minutes after 8pm: Steve, Pete & Faith, Chris & Rachel(?), Elizabeth and I.
We had a few “show and tell” items, including no less than 3 Sinclair Spectrums, Steve’s beautiful field telephone (which he is putting a bluetooth headset into, but unfortunately let the magic-smoke out on the last joint to be soldered) Pete also brought his Wiseduino (an arduino with built in clock) – destined to be part of his allotment-monitoring installation. I brought along my old copy of a classic manual J.Muir’s “How to Keep your Volkswagen Alive”. Also Steve handed around some sachets of “Sugru” the fascinating air-cured silicone rubber used for fixing & hacking, well anything at all really.
Chris Tubbs regaled us with stories of induction furnaces and other antics at the bomb-factory. We also mentioned yarnbombing, future events (including some possible outdoor geekery), sourcing liquid-nitrogen, building electric vehicles and lots of other stuff that I don’t recall right now…
Anyone else care to chip-in for the stuff I didn’t hear or that I’ve forgotten?
Good summary, that’ll do nicely!
It’s about time we made our own Arduino derivative…

Umm. I think it’s called Umm. And they serve Barenaked beers from Canton’s Artisan Brewery.
It doesn’t look that big a place, but it does add some weight to the idea of a Cathays meeting. (We could even try Mango on the opposite side of Cathays Terrace.)
It keeps logging me out automatically when I comment, it’s probably my local machine playing up.

A quick summary of the event:
July’s Geek Cluster was our first at Chapter. And Chapter is of course, a fantastic, buzzing, creative place. In many ways it’s exactly the right place for Geekcluster. (On the downside, it can be too busy, noisy and a bit expensive for drinks too.) But I think we may stick with it for our Cardiff meetings for a while at least. Maybe we’ll find somewhere better; but it won’t be easy.
Anyway, without our hardware-hackers in attendance we had a slightly more literary bent this time. Despite our diminshed numbers, we had fun. We talked about Museums and Libraries, Yarnbombing and Guerrilla-Gardening, reading-habits, iphones & android phones and e-readers, specialization and expertise amongst geeks, typing, handwriting, fonts and even calligraphy. We had a few pipe-dreams on aerial-photography, ballistics, hackerspaces etc…
Puns and wordplay were also a constant theme.
