    Regularity?

So, Geekcluster seems to be fun when we get round to doing it. And the idea of doing one month in Cardiff and one month in Treforest seems to be ideal too.

But it’s all far too ad-hoc.  So, it would be great if we could pick a regular day of the week/month to meet; instead of this messy “are we meeting or aren’t we?” arrangement we have at the moment.

Ideally,  I’d say one of the following options might work well:

    • 2nd Wednesday of each month.
    • 2nd Friday of each month.
    • Last Wednesday of each month.
    • Last Friday of each month.

    What do you think?

    Any suggestions welcome as always…

I think any of those sounds grand. Although I generally prefer Fridays, Wednesdays might be quieter?

    • IIIIIkoolaidIIII 2:23 PM on 17 August 2010 Permalink

AAny of those sounds good, for me Fridays would be better due to 0630 wake up time in the week.

Well. Things have been a bit busy around here recently.
But we must do a Cardiff meeting sometime very soon.
How are we fixed for the week of the 14th? (Friday 18th Perhaps?)

    And where? Vulcan? Central Bar?

    • Irregular Shed 12:56 PM on 9 June 2010 Permalink

Central Bar on a Friday night… are you insane? =)

I’d prefer to leave it til the end of the month, if that’s okay. Got a lot of things on my plate right now.

    • quixoticquisling 1:02 PM on 9 June 2010 Permalink

I could do Fri 18th, maybe a social at the Romilly beer garden in Canton? (OK it’s my local. Better than Wetherspoons on a Friday though.) I think a minimum of 2 of us is enough, then if anyone else can make it even better?

I can’t do end of the month – nor any of July! But have fun if you meet up then.

    • dorkomatic 1:10 PM on 9 June 2010 Permalink

Insane? Quite possibly. Other suggestions grateful received.

18th or end of month? Or some other time?
I suppose I could do both (subject to Mrs Dorkomatic’s approval)

Anyone else care to throw their hat into the ring? (What hat? What ring?)

    • dorkomatic 11:59 AM on 24 June 2010 Permalink

I guess the student population will be dwindling shortly.. When and where shall we meet? #geekcluster (It’s a shame not to have Carl with us; but I’m sure we’ll cope – he’ll be off to Glastonbury etc…) So when is a good time for you all?

  • dorkomatic 11:20 AM on 3 April 2010 Permalink | Reply

I could do the Friday too. So which shall we do? Carl, Steve, anyone?

    When?

So, having failed to organise anything at all for a couple of months, how about a meeting at our HQ in the Otley sometime in April? But when?

    • quixoticquisling 4:19 PM on 1 April 2010 Permalink

      Tues 20th or Weds 21st?

    • dorkomatic 6:22 PM on 1 April 2010 Permalink

I could do either of those.
      I’d prefer the Wednesday though.

    • Irregular Shed 7:29 PM on 1 April 2010 Permalink

I was going to suggest Friday 16th – because we can have a Friday night get-together in the Otley and still have peace =)

    • quixoticquisling 5:18 PM on 3 April 2010 Permalink

I can’t do the Friday but you should probably go ahead and do it.

    • dorkomatic 8:21 PM on 5 April 2010 Permalink

I caught up with Nermal (Pete) and Faith yetserday, and they can only really make the Tuesday (13th) since they’re going away for a a week (or is it two)

    • dorkomatic 11:44 AM on 8 April 2010 Permalink

I just realised that TEDxCDF is on next week too.
Perhaps we should postpone it until later in the Month?

    • Irregular Shed 4:43 PM on 8 April 2010 Permalink

Let’s let them come back and aim for sometime around month’s end.

    • dorkomatic 4:55 PM on 8 April 2010 Permalink

Yeah, How about Tuesday 27th, Wed 28th or Friday 30th?

    • dorkomatic 11:36 AM on 12 April 2010 Permalink

It seems we have a date for the next Geek Cluster (at last)…

Friday April 30th at the Otley!

    Next Meeting?

It’s about time we thought about our next meeting for GeekCluster. When would suit everyone? And should we try a new venue perhaps? Opinions, ideas & suggestions welcome!

    • Carl Morris 4:59 AM on 7 February 2010 Permalink

I’d like to meet in The Vulcan.

On date I think I’m freer than most. Maybe create a Doodle with 4 or 5 possible dates? You could post it here and people can respond.

    • foomandoonian 12:49 PM on 8 February 2010 Permalink

      Doodle is pretty neat.

I just don’t like Wednesdays, but I could probably cope.

    • dorkomatic 12:53 PM on 8 February 2010 Permalink

      Don’t like Wednesdays generally?
      Or just w.r.t. GeekCluster?

      Any other thoughts on venues?

    • Irregular Shed 1:30 PM on 8 February 2010 Permalink

I’d be happy to try The Vulcan provided there’s a quiet spot that we can claim for ourselves.

    • dorkomatic 7:37 PM on 8 February 2010 Permalink

That’s my concern about the Vulcan too. I’d happily meet there, but it might be very busy on a Friday night. We might need a “plan B” ?

    • dorkomatic 10:45 AM on 10 February 2010 Permalink

As for date, the current favourite seems to be Friday 26th Feb. But of course Fridays are likely to be busy in town.

A few other suggestions for the venue:
Central Bar (upstairs) – like the SWLUG folk do.
Pen & Wig? Goat Major? Chapter?
One of the “Lounges” – or indeed any of several other Coffee joints around (mostly outside the city centre.)

Incidentally, how do the Ponty folk normally travel down to Cardiff? (Obviously if you come down by train it would be best to be near a station.)

    • foomandoonian 10:55 AM on 10 February 2010 Permalink

I like the sound of one of the Lounges. They may be busy on a Friday, but I quite like them. You can usually grab a big table to gather around too.

      I’m not really a pub person…

    • Faith Adelaide 10:55 AM on 10 February 2010 Permalink

We’ll probably train it down, so somewhere near a station would be very useful :o ) I dont mind driving if you had other ideas of where to go….
Most of the dates are fine with me – I’ll just go with the flow – as long as its not too noisy!!!

    • quixoticquisling 7:02 PM on 10 February 2010 Permalink

      I assume you’re talking about http://www.thelounges.co.uk

Juno Lounge on Wellfield Road (off Albany Road) is alright. It’s about 15 minutes walk from Cathays station. Free wifi. And if we shout loud enough we won’t hear the ghastly loungecore muzak they pipe out… :-)

    • dorkomatic 10:52 PM on 11 February 2010 Permalink

On my way home from work today through Cathays, I thought of a few other possible venues close to Cathays station: the new cafe where Funky Bhuddha used to be, another very new cafe next to where The End used to be, or there’s the Mackintosh, the Woodville, or even the new Cardiff Arts Institute (was Incognito)
Any opinions on any of these?

    • quixoticquisling 8:09 PM on 14 February 2010 Permalink

Woodville might be alright as long as not too loud. Near Cathays station. How about it then?

Ahh, Cardiff Arts Institute have a little quiet “secret” room upstairs with a pingpong table, that might be worth a look. Otherwise it’s a bit loud, especially on weekend nights.

We tried Mackintosh for the first ever meet-up, remember? We didn’t like it too much…

For Cardiff Central station proximity, I think it’s worth giving Nos Da another go as long as it’s not the eve either side of a rugby match.

    • dorkomatic 9:39 AM on 18 February 2010 Permalink

Apparently there IS rugby on the 26th Feb and the 27th Feb too for that matter. So a lot of places will be busy then. To avoid such crowds, I guess it would be best to do a Wednesday or maybe Friday 5th March?

I quite like the idea of trying the Woodville, (partly because it has so many ‘Plan-B’ options if it turns out to be too crowded or noisy.)

Incidentally, the place in Cathays where the End used to be is also known as the Vulvan (how confusing!)

    • dorkomatic 10:22 AM on 25 February 2010 Permalink

Hey. I know, I’ve dropped the ball on this again. I’m currently thinking that the 5th of March would be good for the next meeting. But I haven’t managed to check out any of the alternative venues – to see how busy they might get on a Friday. So, any last calls for favourite venues? Nos Da? Woodville? Central Bar?

    • dorkomatic 11:11 AM on 2 March 2010 Permalink

Foomandoonian reminded me that this week already has the Cardiff Ignite on Thursday at the WMC; and for that matter it’s also the Cardiff SWLUG event on Wednesday. So Friday 5th is not a very clever date to choose after all. Maybe we’ll put it off for another week or so, avoiding Rugby, other Geek events etc.
And we still need to find a proper venue, I don’t think we’ve found a “home” in Cardiff yet.

    • quixoticquisling 11:31 PM on 2 March 2010 Permalink

There’s an intriguing new place on the corner of Flora Street and Cathays Terrace (opposite the Flora pub). It’s called “Urrr…” or something like that. They do loads of real ale! I guess it’s a bar. Doesn’t look like one. Merits further investigation.

Yes, that’s the place. It is called Umm.

Mango is excellent for food (tapas) but beer is restaurant prices, a bit more than you want it to be.

This website is rapidly turning into the Geek Cluster Soirée Guide South Wales.

    • dorkomatic 1:25 PM on 4 March 2010 Permalink

Yeah. I know. I somehow managed to post it to the wrong thread.
Mango looks good; but I’d sooner meet in a pub (if it’s a quietish one with good beer)

    A Grand Day Out?

    Steampunk

    Steampunk Exhibition

I’m considering a trip to the steampunk exhibition in Oxford  (possibly on the 6^H^H13th February) If anyone wants to tag along, they’d be very welcome. Let me know…

      I’m definitely going – possibly with a car-full (or I’d offer lifts)
I was going to go for my birthday the other week, so now I feel I’m ‘owed’ a trip…

I’m still planning on going on Saturday (family day out.)

Well, I’ve set up a Gravatar. I wonder if it will pick it up!?
